T-shirt. The Eagles, Nazareth. Skin

long past burnt, flakes and strips peeled

and picked each evening between cigs

by girlfriends in perms, tight ringlets

like waterfalls against bare shoulders,

teasing skin into birdsong. Outdated.

Small fleet of Chevettes, K-cars, the odd S-10.

All painted Tremclad flat black, rolled on thick

between beers. Cases of Molson 50 stubbies

sweating on the floor, out of the sun. One of

the older fellas walks by, chats about the heat.

Offers a nip of Seagram’s, to share a toke.

CCR’s “The Working Man” keeps ’em all busy enough

not to notice they’d rather be trouting, rather

give in to this midday heat, dodge down

to the Corner Market for another doz-box,

pack of Du Maurier. Chat up the new cashier

with the Pat Benatar haircut.

Something about the colour of things,

then. Something mono, something VHS,

AM radio about it all concerning aspect

ratios. Pre-pixel. Something so believable

in its seeming impossibility — that we used to

smoke in hospitals, cars only had mirrors

on the driver’s side, bench seating.

That someone was still considering the lunar

landing, still mildly amazed by colour TV,

how we ever got over two world wars.

Always letting go of what we know, how

we live on the future’s brilliant, polished edge.

To accommodate rapidly increasing population it was decided in the early 60’s that Corner Brook should have its own Churchill Park in St. John’s. Sir Brian Dunfield was knighted by Great Britain not as Supreme Court lawyer and judge but for his brilliant leadership of the St. John’s Housing Corporation, was made chairman of the Public Housing Authority of Corner Brook in 1965. It was not the judge’s first look at the west coast city. Several years earlier he had expressed the opinion, in a speech at St. John’s, that the best cure for Corner Brook’s ills would be a large scale fire.
